Christmas tree quilt

17 03 2018

When I was on my quilting retreat with friends in February, I put this Christmas tree top together — I’d made the trees back in January, but hadn’t had a chance to finish off the quilt top with the extra white fabric. The trees are made from fabric scraps in blues, greens, and purples. I based my trees on this pattern from Craftsy: https://www.craftsy.com/quilting/article/scrappy-christmas-tree-quilt-block/. I added a yellow, orange, or red swatch of fabric at the top of each tree to emulate a star or light.

I quilted it with wobbly vertical lines, with the occasional ‘snowflake’ interspersed in amongst them. And I added Christmas stars and radiating ‘lights’ at the top of each tree, in a gold metallic thread. It’s bound in the same white fabric as used in the rest of the quilt top.

Blue, grey, and gold Asian-style quilt

17 03 2018

When I was on my quilting retreat with friends in February, I made two more quilt tops from the pattern I created myself (see the second quilt in this post: https://rhondabracey.com/2018/01/31/pink-quilts-for-donating-to-the-mcgrath-foundation/). Both were made with Asian-style fabrics, in cotton fat quarters.

This is the blue, grey, and gold themed one; the other is red and gold (https://rhondabracey.com/2018/03/17/red-and-gold-asian-style-quilt/).

I quilted it in overlapping squares, using a gold thread. The border is a black fabric with a gold dot pattern. The backing fabric is a navy cotton.

Red and gold Asian-style quilt

Both were made with Asian-style fabrics, in cotton fat quarters.

I quilted it with overlapping spirals, using a gold thread. The border is a black fabric with a gold dot pattern. The backing fabric is a very soft cream cotton.

Community Quilt 381

What a cheerful quilt this was! Lots of green book worms, surrounded by white space and small bright coloured squares, and a cheery border. As usual I started by stitching in the ditch around all the main blocks, in white. Then I swapped to a lime green thread and just did a large meandering stipple across the main quilt top. I used the same thread in the border to free-motion stitch the lines there.

Red, white, pink/apricot, and aqua — not colours I’d think to put together, but I think they worked well in this quilt. I started by stitching in the ditch around the blocks (in red), then did a large meandering stipple in the border (also in red thread). For the main top, I stitched an ‘open headband‘ motif in a soft aqua thread.

Someone spent a lot of time making blocks from tiny scraps — the finished squares were only about 1″. How to quilt it? As usual I started by stitching in the ditch around the main blocks and borders. Then I decided to do something simple because the scrap fabrics were so ‘busy’ — I free-motion stitched lines through the centre of each row of squares, in a checkboard pattern. I didn’t use a ruler, but even with wonky lines, the illusion is of straight lines. I left the sashing strips unquilted and did a line of straight stitching (this time with a ruler) in the border, a half inch from the seam line.

I think was my first tumbling blocks quilt! I started by stitching in the ditch around the borders and across some of the blocks, following the seam lines. Then I did a cathedral windows motif in the diamond shapes, in a pale blue thread.
