Wiki ‘suicide missions’

17 09 2007

I’m currently reading Wiki for Dummies, and came across this delightful piece in Part III, Chapter 9:

Don’t go on wiki suicide missions

Wikis don’t have magical powers. They cannot create camaraderie where none exists, nor can they streamline an out-of-control operation. They are not powerful information magnets, nor will they make your team better writers, more organized, or more intelligent. In short, without a strong guiding hand, wikis are useless.

Wikis cannot promise instant returns or unbelievable creativity. Wikis allow users to quickly and easily update and upload information. Wikis are no substitute for holding a meeting, contacting your team members, or doing hard work yourself.

I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Cruising for a career

17 09 2007

A friend’s blog had a list of careers that the “Career Cruising” site matched to her interests. Because I used to work with her and had a good idea of her skills, it was interesting to see how close a match this automated process was for her.

So I did the test myself and came up with this list of the top 25 jobs most matched to my interests. The ratings next to each are according to a further test on my self-assessed skill levels. Here’s my list:

  1. Editor – Very Good Match
  2. Market Research Analyst – Very Good Match
  3. Communications Specialist – Very Good Match
  4. GIS Specialist – Good Match
  5. Public Policy Analyst – Very Good Match
  6. Print Journalist – Very Good Match
  7. Translator – Fair Match
  8. Technical Writer – Good Match
  9. Lobbyist – Good Match
  10. Political Aide – Good Match
  11. Public Relations Specialist – Very Good Match
  12. Activist – Good Match
  13. Criminologist – Very Good Match
  14. Computer Network Specialist – Good Match
  15. Cartographer – Good Match
  16. Writer – Very Good Match
  17. Critic – Very Good Match
  18. Economic Development Officer – Very Good Match
  19. Desktop Publisher – Good Match
  20. Computer Trainer – Very Good Match
  21. Cartoonist / Comic Illustrator – Fair Match
  22. Corporate Trainer – Good Match
  23. Artist – Fair Match
  24. Economist – Very Good Match
  25. Website Designer – Good Match

Interestingly, my first career—teacher-librarianship—didn’t rank in the top 25 at all.

Of those 25, some are just so way out there that they were a surprise (esp. those to do with politics, economics, art, and PR). However the rest are really interesting! I currently work as a technical communicator (#3) which encompasses some website design work (#25) and critiquing (#17), tech writing—of course—(#8), DTP (#19), and editing (#1). I’ve been interested in maps and map making since I was a kid and would’ve pursued cartography (#15) or GIS (#4) if they were available. I was also fascinated by genetics and forensics (#13). For some years after leaving the secondary school teaching environment, I did computer training for adults (#20), and more recently I’ve presented to colleagues at international conferences (#22). So that’s 11 out of the 25 that I currently do, or were interested in pursuing. Not bad considering there are *thousands* of careers and job titles out there.

Turning on a dime

16 09 2007

My Mum and I are off to Melbourne on Thursday to go to the AFL preliminary Final between Collingwood and Geelong!!! It won’t be the Grand Final (which is on my ‘must do once in my lifetime’ list) but is as near as it gets!!! Some 90,000 people are expected to be at the game on Friday night. We’ve got flights, accommodation really close to the hallowed MCG, and rental car all booked!

Talk about spur of the moment! I’ve actually got a 2-day training course I was meant to attend in Bunbury on Thurs/Friday this week, then a quilt workshop on Saturday. All have to be cancelled/postponed. It’s not every day that someone in your family gets to play in such a game.

Oh, and we’ll have tickets too!

Lemon math

15 09 2007

Many recipes call for “the juice of 2 lemons”, for example. But when I have a surfeit of lemons, I pick a couple of large bags of them and squeeze and freeze them in ice cube trays. So “the juice of 2 lemons” doesn’t mean much to me… Today I decided to change that, using what I’ve just termed “lemon math”!

I picked 24 lemons, squeezed them, then poured them in to ice cube trays. Then I counted the ice cubes—70 from those 24 lemons, which works out at 2.91 lemon ice cubes per lemon. Close enough to three for me! So next time I get a recipe like that, I’ll know to use three of my lemon ice cubes to substitute for each lemon. (Yes, I could’ve looked this up on the internet, but hey, I had to juice those lemons anyway, so it was just as easy to do the math myself.)

Marzipan knitting

15 09 2007

I have no clue how I came across this blog post (http://veganyumyum.com/2007/06/knit-night-cupcakes/), but for a first-timer, the author sure put her four hours to a very creative use of marzipan!

Even more excitement!

15 09 2007

Collingwood beat West Coast Eagles last night at Subiaco Oval in an absolute nail-biter. I was only watching it on TV and I was on the edge of my seat! At full time, the scores were level. So for only the second time in AFL history (according to the commentators), a final went in to extra time—a six minute break, followed by two 5 minute ‘halves’ with a 2 minute break between halves when the coaches weren’t allowed on the field.

Collingwood kicked three goals in that short time to win by 19 points, so they’re in to the Preliminary Final against Geelong at the MCG in Melbourne next Friday night. I’ve been checking the airfares… If they win that game, they’re in the Grand Final. Who’d’a thought???

Much excitement!

14 09 2007

I had a call from my sister this morning. My 4-year-old nephew will be the Collingwood mascot at tonight’s AFL final between West Coast Eagles and Collingwood!!! He’ll run through with his brother. It seems he’s *that* excited he couldn’t sleep last night. He thinks he’s going to be playing so wants to drink energy drinks today so he has enough energy to kick the ball “a long way”. Cute!

We won’t be at the game… someone has to stay home and record this momentous occasion for the entire family (who will all be at the game tonight).

Feeling miffed

9 09 2007

When we sold our house late last year, the agent was adamant that the young couple who wanted it “absolutely loved the house”. And when I met them for the handover stuff in mid-February that’s the impression I had too. Because they loved it *so* much we accepted some $50K less than our ‘head figure’. The story was that they just couldn’t go to that extra amount, even after borrowing from friends and family (as well as the bank).

On Friday, after I’d collected the food from the Indian restaurant, I drove past the old house on the way to the freeway. You could’ve knocked me over with a feather! The house has been repainted and is for sale again, only 6 months after they supposedly moved in. The selling agent isn’t a local agent, so when I got home I checked the agent’s website…

I doubt this couple ever moved in at all. According to the website, there’s a ‘brand new executive chef’s kitchen’ and the photos show that the bathroom has had a full makeover, all the rooms have been painted, and all the carpet ripped up and the floorboards polished. Some serious work has been done in 6 months and much of it could not be done while someone was living in the house. The killer is that the price it’s now for sale for is some 55% MORE than the price we got only 6 months ago.

So why do I feel miffed? It’s no longer our house – I don’t have a problem with that. It’s been renovated and is offered for a much higher price – I don’t have a problem with that either. What has*really* annoyed me is that we (and I suspect our agent) were sold a pack of lies in order to reduce the price. Had we been told that this couple were intending to buy and renovate, fine. But we weren’t. We were told all along that they loved the place and wanted to live there forever.

I can’t even justify this ‘churn’ of the property based on a relationship break up. Some serious renovations have been done which would not indicate a relationship gone sour. I just think they saw an opportunity to make some money… and we got sucked in to dropping our price because we genuinely *believed* that they intended living in the house.

I really hope that they get burned with Capital Gains Tax seeing as though they haven’t owned the property for more than 12 months and haven’t lived in it as their principle residence. I know that sounds mean, but I’m feeling quite miffed about being lied to.

Update: It’s now November 2 November 24 and our old house is still for sale. They’ve dropped their whopping asking price by some $30K (chicken feed) and the advertising says they’re relocating overseas and really need to sell. Yeah, right. I wonder what lies they told this time. After I wrote this post back in September, I emailed the agent who handled the sale. She has NEVER responded, which makes me think she knew what they were up to all along, and possibly makes her complicit in getting us to drop our price. Real estate agents in our state are meant to act for the seller, not the buyer. I’m not sure that that’s what happened here. But I do get some sort of perverse satisfaction knowing that it’s been on the market for two three months, with ‘home opens’ most weekends, and it still hasn’t sold…

Further update (24 Feb 2008): The old house went back on the market in late January, with a different (local) agent, and with a further $115K reduction in price. When I went on the new agent’s website yesterday I saw that it was “under offer” after some 3 weeks or so back on the market.

Funny invoice

8 09 2007

I think I have a weird sense of humour… Today I was doing the accounts and as I was about to screw up an invoice from the quilt shop I went to yesterday, I noticed that one of the line entries was “Fat Quarter Ass Fabric”!!!

Quilters know that this is a collection of assorted ‘fat quarters’, but you might get strange looks from someone who didn’t quilt. (BTW, a ‘fat quarter’ is a piece of fabric that is a quarter yard wide and half the width of fabric. At least, that’s what I think it is!)
